I CANNOT MOVE WITHOUT DIRECTION

“And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the Lord,

saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?

And the Lord said unto him, Go up.

And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.”

--2 Samuel 2:1

Lucy laid in her bed one morning just thinking, it was almost 8:30 and she still hadn’t moved because she didn’t know what to wear. When she finally figured out what she was going to wear it was way past the hour of nine and she was going to be late for work. When Lucy finally arrived at work she had voicemails awaiting her and unread emails to answer, feeling overwhelmed Lucy grabbed a cup of coffee instead of tackling her work. When she returned to her desk, Lucy began reading emails but was soon confronted with a personal call from a friend who needed her help. Lucy knew her friend needed her but her clients needed her too, what was she to do next?

Life can get like Lucy’s sometimes where we become bogged down with work, personal choices, and outside drama, so what do we do when it seems like no decision is the right decision? Well we consult God! When Lucy woke up that morning, her first mistake was not talking to God about her day, she should have asked God how to proceed with her day, but she didn’t because like most of us, we think “why do I have to ask God about the ‘little things’?” But often times it’s the little things in life that end up hindering us from obtaining the bigger picture. Huh, how so? Well if Lucy had only consulted God about what to wear, as insignificant as it seems, she wouldn’t have been late to work, and she would’ve had time to review her emails and retrieve her voicemails all in enough time to be in place to help her friend in her time of need. But one move without direction cost Lucy time and caused frustration.

David realized in his walk with God that every step he took needed to be ordered by God. That’s why David always enquired of the Lord what he should do and where he should go, even for something as simple as passing through one city versus another. Think about it, how many of us ask God if we should take I-95 or the back-roads to work? Probably not many, but that’s what we need to do in life. Why? Because we’ll find that if we don’t we aren’t moving as quickly as we’d like and in fact we’ll actually come to a complete stop and wonder why we aren’t progressing, all because we failed to seek God’s direction.

When David asked God for direction, he got his answer, God said go to Hebron, which is a city of Judah. We may think well David was on the right track with thinking that he should go into one of the cities of Judah, but he still had to consult God. We may be on the right track with our thoughts or actions, but we still have to run every thought and act by God to ensure that we are following the path He has aligned with us.

In reality we cannot move without God’s direction, even when we think we’re moving, because should we make the wrong move, we’ll find ourselves right back where we started. So today let us enquire of God, let us ask Him to make the moves in our lives so that we can move forward!
