The Roads Are Slippery, Don't Slip

Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.

--Psalm 17:5

The remnants of the snow had left the ground wet, but Marty sped along to get home from his long day. Driving along the wet slippery road, he hit a few potholes and as a result lost air in one of his tires, but he continued on and did not slow down. To Marty the roads had been plowed and it really didn’t look that slippery, but as he continued on he almost hit an innocent pedestrian, and that’s when he realized that he was just going too fast. Marty slowed down and thanked God that it wasn’t worse.

How about us? Are we like Marty? Do we travel down the road of life hitting the potholes of depression, swerving around the icy patches of grief, sliding along the path of stress, or dodging the sand pellets of disappointment only to almost lose our license to live? That is our license to live the life that God has destined for us? Sure we can live and get by speeding along, but what promises do we forfeit and what time do we waste hurrying along without God?

Well maybe we are like Marty and we’re just driving down the path of life too fast and not taking the time to proceed with caution by asking God to control our speed. The psalmist knew that he needed God to control his speed lest he should slip. He knew that if God didn’t slow him down he would fall and so he asked God to hold his goings, or direct his footsteps in His path so that he wouldn’t stray from the course.

In the same manner we need to ask God to adjust our speed in life so that we don’t miss what He has for us by going too fast or even never reach our intended destination for going too slow. At the end of the day the road of life is filled with bumps, potholes, curves, and slippery surfaces, and often time they are put there so we can slow down and appreciate what God is doing in the moment, even when we think we need to get to our destination.

Today let us ask God to adjust our speed so that we always move at the pace He has set for us. Remember the road of life can be slippery, so don’t slip, trust God with your life!
