You're Not The Boss!

And when all things shall be subdued unto him,

then shall the Son also himself be subject

unto him that put all things under him,

that God may be all in all.

--1 Corinthians 15:28

Kathy was really creative, in fact she was an asset to her team and her manager couldn’t speak more highly of her contributions to their success. Kathy prided herself on this and began to think that her creativity somehow compensated for her lack of structure. She came into work late, took long lunches, and entertained lengthy telephone calls. Her boss pointed her poor work habits out to her and she replied, “you need to look at your own work habits because this team wouldn’t produce results if not for me!” Stunned and shocked at her response, her boss fired her for insubordination and poor work ethic. Kathy realized in that moment, she was not invincible.

Perhaps we know people like Kathy or maybe we ourselves think like Kathy, where we think the world needs us and that our word is the final say. Maybe we get too “high for our britches” at times and we forget that we are trampling on someone else when we really should appreciate them or even the place that we are in. Our issue may not be at work, but maybe it’s at home and we think we deserve to have a roof over our heads and forget to say thank you to the one who’s providing it, or maybe our issue is amongst friends and we always think we have the right answer and that our answers somehow override everyone else’s. Well, if we think like this or know of someone who does, newsflash: we’re not the boss!

What? You mean my word isn’t the beginning and the end, the first and the last? No, it’s not! The first and final word rests with God. The word of God instructs us and reminds us that all things are subject to our heavenly Father, even his Son! What? Yes, Jesus Christ is even subject to someone, so what makes us any different? Christ set the precedent for us to follow: we are to be subject to God, His will, and His way—no substitution. The Bible is very clear that there is coming a time when all things in this earth shall be made subject to God, even death, and at that point, even our Lord and Savior, will be subject to the Most High God, so that He may be all that He needs to be in all of us.

Many times we don’t experience the victory that we need in our lives because we’re too busy being the “boss.” Huh? Yes, in other words, we get caught up with telling God what we should be doing, who we should be doing it with, and how we should do it, instead of simply closing our mouths and allowing Him to instruct us on what to do. True victory can only come when we make up in our own minds that we are completely yielding to God, for it is when we yield completely to Him that we can experience His “all” for our lives.

Kathy missed this point because she felt that her gift was greater than the one who allowed her the opportunity to exercise her gift. So many of us do the same thing, we forget that it is God who has given us the ability to do what we do and not we ourselves. When we lose sight of God, we lose it all. Don’t get caught up trying to be the boss, but simply recognize who is and be happy to know that when He is in control, you are sure to get paid, ‘cause truth be told, “you’re not the boss”!
