No Time Like the Present

Marsha had at least ten things to accomplish in a twenty-four hour period, not including sleep. She had to finish her project at work, drop and pick her children up from school, get the clothes out of the cleaners, attend the church meeting, cook dinner, study for her upcoming final (as she was a grad student), and help the children with their homework after school. By the end of the day, Marsha was exhausted, but she was thankful that all her tasks were accomplished. What Marsha failed to realize, however, was that in the midst of all of her busyness and tasks, she failed to meet with God.

How many of us do the same thing? We consume ourselves with all of life's tasks, forgetting the major task at hand: spending time with God.  For some reason the job takes precedence and we can't attend church on Sundays anymore; the children become a priority and we can't manage to find time for prayer or worship because we're attending all of their events and their activities; the relationship consumes our thoughts and we can't seem to think on God; school becomes our focus and we can't seem to study our word. When these things happen, we become just like Marsha: too busy to see we are missing the mark and wasting precious time.

Time is the one thing none of us can get back once it is gone! Yet we spend so much time wasting it! Psalm 90:12 reminds us that we must ask God to teach us to "number our days" or in other words teach us to value our time so that we may gain "wisdom." Appreciating every moment of the day will ultimately remind us to be ever mindful and thankful for everything that we have. When we are in a place and position of thankfulness, we can't help but spend time with God, recognizing why time is just so precious.

When we walk in wisdom we will make choices that are pleasing to God, making the best use of our time. We will also remember things like, God gives his beloved rest, God makes everything known in the fullness of time, and that everything has a season, or time and place. Knowing the value of time is wisdom because it teaches us to approach each day with more determination to spend our days pleasing the One who matters most! We may have wasted time in the past, but let's not continue down that path, for there is no time like the present to make changes and use our time wisely!

Today let us make the best use of our time as we soon will discover just how short time really is!
