Lean on Me

Gabrielle was in love. As a result she leaned on Neil for everything. She called him for advice, for help fixing things, for financial support, and for affection. She didn't make a move without him. In fact she spent so much time with him that she barely had anytime for family, friends, and yes even God.

Leaning on Neil like this was quite burdensome for Neil as he couldn't always meet her needs or make sense of the issues she was facing. He would often tell her to figure try and figure it out in her own, but she couldn't and trying to would only make matters worse as she always seemed to make the wrong decision. Finally Neil looked in the face one day and said, "I can never be all you want me to be, only God can, you need to learn to lean on Him."

How many of us can relate to Gabrielle? Searching for love, strength, and answers in all the wrong places. Sure God places people in our lives to help us but not for us to totally depend on. Moreover God doesn't even want us to lean on ourselves or our own thoughts, ideas, or opinions more than Him. He wants our total reliance to be on Him.

Proverbs 3:5 reminds us to trust in the Lord with all of our heart, leaning not on our own understanding, but to acknowledge Him in all if our ways and He will direct our paths. In other words we must solely rely on God's word to lead us, especially in times of uncertainty. We must never get comfortable in our own way of thinking as to forget to consult God in our decision making or life struggles. More importantly we have to learn to lean on God for everything: provision, health, wealth, strength, love, peace, and joy. No one person will be able to satisfy that need or lead us into our destiny but God.

Today let us learn to lean on God for everything we need.
